Surroundings & Routes - Monterchi
At the frontier between Tuscany and Umbria the medieval village "Monterchi" takes place.
It enjoies an enviable position regarding the view.
But what makes very famous Monterchi is the presence of a beautiful masterpiece : the painting "La Madonna del Parto" painted by Piero della Francesca in 1459, probably because he wanted honour his mother who was born in Monterchi.
Masterfully restored in 1992, the painting is protected today by a very modern shrine in a small museum and for this it can be admired also without any reservation.
Visiting Monterchi is the ideal crowning of the Piero della Francesca itinerary which obviously includes the Arezzo's and Sansepolcro's works, but which lives again in the "Madonna del Parto" and in the scenery of Monterchi.
An other little jewel is the museum of "Weights and Measures" in the Massi palace. It is a straordinary and very numerous collection of instruments from all the epochs for the measurement of the variest weights.
